World at large

Journal Entry: Fri Jun 13, 2008, 9:41 AM
Why are you reading this?

Why would anyone read this? There are on the order of billions of people on this planet screaming in unison. What is one voice in comparison? I could grab a handful of white sand on a beach with both hands, and the number of grains of sand would not be a fraction of the number of people on this planet.

So what difference does it make what I do? Logically by this reasoning, nothing I do will make a difference. I could research away my entire life researching a cure for cancer and never find anything. I could spend my entire life exploring the vasts oceans of the world for unexplored islands and not find any. I could devote my life to priesthood and never once experience a miracle.

So what now? I think a lot of people ask themselves that same question everyday, as they should. Those who go about their daily lives never experiencing something new or questioning the lives they lead are zombies. Sadly, being a zombie is comfortable. Who wants to worry about what kind of voice they have in the change of the world? Who wants to think about the insignificance of their everyday routines? Most people want to arrive at the end of the week with a paycheck and a pat on the back. Those same people are fortunate if they receive one of the two.

So what is the point? If *I* can't change the world, who can? The answer is noone. Yes, that's correct. However, read carefully in what I say, and you'll see that I said no ONE. Groups of people change the world everyday, for better or for worse. And unlike doing something as an individual, if you do things in groups, the results aren't trivial. The results are real. The seven wonders of the world should be prove that these brilliant works even difficult by today's standards much less at the time in which they were constructed are not only possible, but even realistic.

We need to stop thinking of ourselves as individuals, treating our neighbors as nuisances or objects in the way of things we want. We need to stop thinking of ourselves by the profession we lead or by the gender we represent or by the tone of our skin. We need to stop thinking of ourselves as a nation.

We are mankind. And I for one am going to stop changing the world. Rather, we will change it, one problem at a time, one person at a time, one life at a time. To accept anything less is to let us as a collective sentient race slip into oblivion by self-destruction, like a body which rejects its own organs. The time has arrived, and I am finished waiting for my chance.

Lots and lots of practice, and a desire to be better than where you are now.

As lead rains, will pass on through our phantoms
Forever, forever
Like scarecrows that fuel this flame we're burning
Forever, and ever
Know how much I want to show you you're the only one
Like a bed of roses there's a dozen reasons in this gun

Your art is excellent. Wish I could draw like that. I suppose like anything, just takes a little practice, eh?
